I have read a lot of negative reviews here and was skeptical about going with Fox rental company. But, my experience has been first class... Car was extremely clean. Pickup and drop-off was smooth. I would go with Fox if I get the chance again, especially at the rates they’re providing compared to budget, enterprise, etc.

DRIVING TIPS FOR SAN DIEGO

You’ll need more than a weekend to discover the incredible sights of San Diego, and a car rental from San Diego airport is the ideal way to get around. Follow these tips and driving in San Diego will be a breeze:

  • Plan your trips to avoid driving back and forth around the city. Traffic can be heavy, and a 30-minute journey can take a couple of hours if you hit the city in rush hour (6.30 a.m. – 8.30 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. - 6.30 p.m.)
  • Driving on the freeway can be challenging – keep in lanes 2 and 3 as lane 1 (on the left) is the fast lane and best avoided if you’re not used to the San Diego traffic.
  • Make sure you know which exit to take off the freeway and enter lane 4 in plenty of time or you could get stuck in an outside lane and miss the exit.
  • The famous Highway 101, the Pacific Coast Highway runs from San Diego to Oregon. You’ll find 70 miles of beaches and coastal roads on the San Diego stretch.
  • Watch out for freight trucks on the I-5, which runs from Mexico to Canada. Pass them when you can as having one of these trucks cruising behind you can be intimidating.
  • Parking in San Diego can be expensive so leaving your rental car on the outskirts and using a rideshare app is the best option if you want to save money.
  • Keep to the speed limit, which is 65 mph on most freeways and 55 mph on 2-lane highways.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA?

San Diego, California has one of the most temperate climates in the country. Known for its mild weather year-round, San Diego is a rare city that gives you the California experience of a big city, yet sprawled in and around hills surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and inland greenery. From San Diego, you’re only 2-3 hours away from skiing, desert and downtown Los Angeles, making it a good base for your visit to California.

When you visit San Diego, you’ll have many options of things to do. Here are a few suggestions to start with:

  • Museums – San Diego is home to many museums, with Balboa Park being a central location to around 17 different types of historical buildings including the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Museum of Art . The USS Midway is also available to tour, just to the side of Seaport Village, a mecca of shopping, food and relaxed strolls along the bay.
  • Water sports and activities – San Diego has year-round opportunities for water activities, from sailing, jet skis and parasailing to themed yacht and boat cruises around the bay and beneath the bridges. If laying next to the water and observing is more your style, that is always an option, too, as many beaches surround the area; be ready to share with wildlife and photograph the amazing sea life.
  • Amusement parks and family fun – Sea World is located in downtown San Diego, not far from the Gas Lamp area, Paradise Point and the boardwalk. While you’ll need to drive to get to Sea World, much of the area allows for parking and walking or shuttling between your hotel and venues. San Diego Zoo and the wild animal park are a little more outlying from central San Diego, but both are well worth the few minutes on the road.
  • Restaurants and nightlife – Downtown San Diego is full of history, from the “haunted” Whaley Museum to boutiques, quaint hotels and unique restaurants to suit all of your foodie needs from morning to night. Parking can be tight so keep an eye out for public parking lots that rent you space by the day. There are also areas to enjoy a picnic and breathtaking views.

If you want to make the most of your trip, a cheap car rental from San Diego airport is the best way to explore this dynamic part of California.
