    How to Save Money Renting A Car

    When renting a car, the first thing we usually think about is the cost. We know we need to get everyone in our travel party to their destination safely, on time and in comfort, but we also want to keep the price down.     But exactly how do you save money when renting a car, other than just finding the best deal possible? There are a lot of ways to keep your costs down!

    • Rent from a discount rental car agency, like Fox! Our rates are typically lower than a lot of the bigger agencies, and while we do offer luxury vehicles, most of our vehicles are the commonly requested midsize cars, full size cars, full size SUVs and economy class. If you’re not cruising the coast or taking a fancy trip, maybe a discount rental car is just what you need! Save that money to spend it on other more important things. 

    • Don’t rent more vehicle than you need. Most rental car websites will list typical number of passengers on their site during the reservation process. Downsizing to just what you need may offer you less space, but if money is a consideration, then that may help you save a lot of money over the length of your trip!

    • Check out websites for their daily specials. Fox calls them Hot Deals. They change throughout the day, so if you see a rate you like, often even $7 or less per day, if you grab them fast. The cities change as well as the rates so keep an eye out if you’ve got some flexibility in when you have to make the reservation.

    • Bookmark the coupons and deal pages for your favorite rental car agencies. Many have ongoing deals or discounts, like our current 10% off on SUVs. These change periodically so if one doesn’t suit you right now, another may soon.
    • Join a customer loyalty program. They are usually free, and similar to airline mileage programs, you earn points for car rentals that you book directly through the rental car agency. Save up those points and you can use them for future discounted or free car rentals, or some programs, like ours here at Fox, allow you to redeem those points for gift certificates for other places. (Fox allows you to request gift certificates for many popular online and brick-and-mortar businesses!)

    • Consider online travel agencies or car rental sites where you simply enter your dates of travel and the type of vehicle you’re looking for. They will help you find what you need by doing a lot of searching once for you, behind-the-scenes, so you can choose from the options they find. These can change depending on the time of day and week that you search. 

    • Be flexible with your travel dates. Even a difference of a day or two in either direction can result in much cheaper rates, and that typically applies to accommodations and airline ticket prices, too! Off-season travel can be even more affordable as well.

    • Pay in advance! Many agencies will give you a discount if you pay in advance, and this also speeds up your checkout process when you pick up your vehicle.
