Considering the overall review score I wasn’t sure if it will be a good choice, but all things considered it actually was. Although it’s worth to know Fox Rent is not at the airport exactly, so you have to take the shuttle bus, which I didn’t know about. In the end I got positive experience with the company and their service.

I had an excellent experience here. Check-in & check-out was fast & easy. Car was brand-new. Airport transportation fee ($16) was a surprise, but not Fox's fault. Customer service after my return was exceptional: I left my toll transponder in the car & forgot about it for a month. Veronica M. dug through their lost and found, and regularly kept me informed via e-mail until she found it. Thanks again, Veronica!

I had a great experience with Fox. Flew into SFO in the afternoon and made it to the office quickly. AirTrain to the Rental Car Center and then a short shuttle ride—wait was only a few minutes. No line, and Venus was great. We were upgraded at no charge and drop-off on Monday morning was fast.

DRIVING TIPS FOR SAN FRANCISCO

Driving in San Francisco can be a challenge and keeping calm and confident is the key. Car rental from San Francisco airport offers so many chances to see another side of this bustling city. These driving tips will help you navigate San Francisco with ease:

  • Watch out for bikes, pedestrians, and other drivers as this is a busy city.
  • Avoid the rush hour, particularly in the Golden Gate Bridge area.
  • There are lots of one-way streets - look out for the signs.
  • San Francisco is famous for its hilly streets. If you park on a hill, it’s a legal requirement to point your wheels toward the curb to stop your car from rolling.
  • The speed limit in the city is between 20-25 mph.
  • San Francisco’s streets are set out in a grid, with the main freeways leading to the outskirts and into the main city streets.
  • An essential trip when in San Francisco is a drive over the famous Golden Gate Bridge with a stop at one of the nearby parking lots to view this iconic landmark. Make sure you’re in the correct lane for your exit as there are 6 to choose from. Be prepared to pay a toll to drive over the bridge on the route into San Francisco (there’s no charge to exit).
  • Several other roads also charge a toll and don´t take cash, so you’ll have to pay online.
  • There are plenty of paid parking garages in San Francisco and street parking is metered between 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
  • Keep an eye on your fuel gauge as gas stations can be hard to find.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA?

San Francisco is a historical city of culture, a mix of styles and seasons and views. Built on hills by the by, San Francisco offers more seasonal weather than many areas of California and you’ll want to ring a coat and maybe even an umbrella. With many sightseeing places on the coast, it can get chilly, and you won’t want to be too cold to get out on the boat to Alcatraz, one of the most popular things to do when in the San Francisco area. (Just be sure to reserve tickets ahead of time as they do sell out some days.)

Whether you’re coming with your family or alone, San Francisco is a fun place to explore. There are so many things to fill your days with, you’ll run out of time before you run out of options. Here are a few recommendations to help you start your itinerary:

  • Pier 39 — Surrounded by sea life, the pier is a historical site originally built back in 1905 as a cargo pier. In the 70s, it was transitioned into a waterfront attraction that now encompasses 45 acres of restaurants, food booths and shops. It offers beautiful views of the Bay Bridge, the San Francisco Bay Bridge and Alcatraz Island.
  • Alcatraz — Speaking of Alcatraz, it’s a must-see. Located only a short boat ride from Pier 39, Alcatraz is an original maximum security prison that was closed in 1963. It is now available for tours of its grounds, from actual cells to the scene of an infamous uprising. For an additional fee, you can rent headsets to listen to an audio tour to enhance the experience.
  • Lombard Street — Seen in many movies, this extremely steep and curvy road has to be seen to be given its full justice. Driving is it an experience, but the hearty can also walk the hill.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf — It’s the area’s most popular destination, located near Pier 35, and includes Ghirardelli Square, the Aquarium of the Bay, seaplane excursions (and other water activities), the National Liberty Ship Memorial, numerous shops (including Ghirardelli chocolate, of course) and numerous hotels and restaurants.
  • Trolley Cars — If you’re an old movie buff, you’ve likely seen the trolleys running through the streets of San Francisco. They are still available for public transportation but many hop on them for at least a short ride just for the experience.

Enjoy exploring San Francisco and make the most of cheap car rental from San Francisco airport.
