Traveling to See Fall Colors in the United States

As summer starts to draw to a close and the kids go back to school, travel destinations turn from the beach to seasonal locations. One of the most popular trips is a focus on traveling to see the fall leaves on the east coast, with a few locations also in the west. While there are too many destinations to cover them all, here are a few amazing road trips you can take to enjoy fall foliage at its finest.

Road trips to see the leaves change colors typically begin around Labor Day, depending on which portion of the country you want to see. Whether you like mountains or straightaways, coastal regions or lakeside, we’ve got a good list of places to consider visiting.

The Ozarks:

There is a 35-mile Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway that will take you over and through the Boston Mountain Range and Buffalo National River. Trees of all kinds and leaves of all colors will greet you on this fun road trip through a beautiful, unique area.

Aspen, Colorado:

This destination allows people from the western half of the United States to experience a true fall feeling without having to get on a plane to the east coast. Aspen is a skier’s haven in the winter, so its fall feeling is best experienced from mid-September to mid-October. Weather can vary so be sure to check before you travel.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts:

Every fall leaf traveler will tell you that you need to visit this area, as the 35-mile stretch along Jacob’s Ladder Scenic Byway includes both mountain and lake views. Add a stop at Bash-Bish Falls State Park and you’ll find a spectacular view of three states!

Bar Harbor, Maine:

The Acadia Byway takes you into the Acadia National Park, bringing you astounding views of fall colors, especially on Mount Desert Island. You’ll see blue waters, multicolored trees and mountains in this far-northeast area that belongs on every foliage-chaser’s list. Vermont: No fall foliage travel list is complete without the addition of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Drive the Green Mountain Byway to see the colors displayed alongside farms and valleys, meadows and Mount Mansfield.

Midwest Ohio:

Put this area on your list if you also enjoy covered bridges. Head back in time as you travel through vivid fall colors while seeing some of the best covered bridges straight out of the movies.
