Austin, the capital of Texas, is the 11th largest city in the United States yet is an undervalued destination when considering where to go on a summer road trip. We’re going to help change that with our latest Fox Travel Tips blog post! Located just southeast of central Texas, Austin a vibrant lively capital, second to Phoenix when it comes to most populated capitals. While that may sound crowded, it’s far from it, as Austin is a sprawling city with many reasons for people to both live there and visit. Here are a few of the top fun things to do in Austin, Texas!

When in Rome…visit the state capitol building. Recognized as a historical landmark, it’s a great way to get a feel for the city’s history as well as enjoy an educational tour in an air-conditioned setting. (During the summer, Austin’s temps can be in the 90s.) There are 17 monuments in all to see, a cafeteria if you get hungry, and free guided tours if wandering on your own isn’t your thing.

Don’t forget the amazing landscape garden! Take a stop at Barton Springs Pool, a man-made outdoor recreational swimming pool that’s filled via the main Barton Springs. With average temps around 70 degrees, it’s a fun way to cool off in a spectacular setting under the clouds.

Feel like you’re outside of the city yet still have views of the tall buildings in downtown Austin. It’s in Zilker Park, also home to the beautiful Zilker Botanical Garden, another sight to see. Another way to stay cool? Go ice skating at the Chaparral Ice Center! Open year-round, it’s a fun activity you don’t necessarily equate with a summer vacation, which makes it even more fun for the family.

If you’ve got young ones in your traveling party, a 30-minute detour south of Austin takes you to the Dinosaur Park in Cedar Creek. Walk through the park to meet a huge range of dinosaurs, small to big, and take a picnic lunch as there are no concession stands available.
