Begin Your Trip in the Mile-High City
Known as the Mile-High City, Denver is a hip and modern metropolis right in the middle of the gorgeous Colorado wilderness. There’s plenty to see and do in Denver, with attractions like the magnificent Denver Capitol Building and the wonderful Denver Art Museum. Often called the Napa of Beer, Denver is perfect for anyone that loves a brew! Take a short drive out of town and check out the Red Rocks Amphitheater, the only natural amphitheater in the world. Once you’ve seen the sights of Denver, it’s time to hit the road!
Experience Magnificent Mountain Scenery
Your first stop, and probably the only one you’ll make before heading out of Colorado, is Fort Collins, about an hour out of Denver. Known for being a lovely college town with a distinct character, Fort Collins is also close to the stunning Red Feather Lakes and the Cache la Poudre Canyon. Settle in behind the wheel and enjoy the scenery as you start the journey. If you want to take a detour, head up to the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. Just over the Wyoming border, this park is full of wildlife and wildflowers. Stretch your legs and keep your eye out for moose and bighorn sheep! The next popular stop on the Denver to Yellowstone road trip is the town of Rock Springs. Many people decide to stay overnight to break up the journey but also because of the many things to see and do here. The Rock Springs Natural History Museum is a much-loved attraction, as is the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop.
Once you’re refreshed from your stop at Rock Springs, you can make your way to Boulder. Boulder has great hiking trails right at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Take the time to visit the world-famous Rocky Mountain National Park and then relax and explore Boulder’s fantastic restaurants and great bar scene. The next stop is one of the most famous towns in the state, the city of Jackson. Jackson is popular with winter sports enthusiasts as the skiing here is excellent. In the warmer months, visitors can explore the mountain trails of Jackson Hole or go whitewater rafting. Jackson is renowned for its nightlife and has many fabulous spots to eat, drink, and relax. From Jackson, you will cross over into Idaho and be a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Yellowstone Park. To break this last leg of the journey up, consider stopping at the town of Driggs or detouring back into Wyoming to visit the Grand Teton National Park.

It’s impossible not to overstate the natural wonder of Yellowstone National Park. Truly one of the most spectacular sites in the world, Yellowstone features the Upper Geyser Basin hot springs, which are home to the famous geyser Old Faithful. The Grand Prismatic Spring, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and Lamar Valley are all also must-see attractions.
