THINGS TO DO IN ORANGE COUNTY
Orange County is the home to many major attractions in southern California. From spas to amusement parks to beaches you’ve seen in the movies, to movie studios and the Hollywood sign, everything is accessible from the OC. The weather is affected by beach breezes and while not as temperate as the San Diego area, Orange County is the home of Surf City, USA. It makes a great home base for a California trip, and here are a few ideas for things to do while you’re visiting California.
- Disneyland — Almost everyone coming to California visits the Disneyland Parks and Resorts at some point. Located in Anaheim, not far from the John Wayne Airport, Disneyland is surrounded by restaurants, shops and hotels. Once you park your car, shuttles do most of the work back and forth to the parks for you, and if you stay within the Disney grounds directly, you may not have to use your car at all again until you take that trip to the beach that’s next on everyone’s list. Downtown Disney is also attached and now houses many restaurants and even a House of Blues for concerts.
- Knott’s Berry Farm — Located off of infamous Beach Boulevard, an avenue that will take you straight to the beach if you stay on it, Knott’s is a western-themed amusement park full of boisterous rides, boysenberry desserts and Camp Snoopy, full of rides and games for the younger crowd. Knott’s has its own hotel and just a couple of miles up the road, many within walking distance, you’ll find Medieval Times, Pirate’s Adventure and other family fun opportunities.
- The Beaches — There are too many to list, but Huntington Beach is known as Surf City, USA. It’s located not far from Bolsa Chica State Beach, and while there are parking rules and usage guidelines, most beaches allow for all-day stays ending in nights around the fire pits, enjoying the waves from morning till night. Head south along PCH (Pacific Coast Highway, or Coast Highway) and visit Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and San Clemente, all upscale shopping and nightlife meccas with views for miles.
- Sports Activities — Orange County is home to Angel Stadium and the Los Angeles Angels. Nearby is the Honda Center, a large concert venue that consistently hosts big-named entertainment throughout the year, including the Mighty Ducks hockey team. If you want to get active yourself, Orange County has many skate parks, public tennis courts and beautiful golf courses available for use. Hiking throughout the hills is another popular activity.
California is full of year-round events and Orange County is a microcosm of fun whatever time of year you visit. If you plan a holiday visit, it may be more crowded but that’s because it’s even more beautiful.
